Nursing Staffing and Quality of Patient Care

According to a literature review by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, increased nurse staffing levels in hospitals are associated with decreased patient mortality, shorter LOS, and lower risk of adverse events. However, the authors note that these associations are not necessarily cause-and-effect relationships because they may stem in part from other factors such as quality improvement programs, which can have limited or extensive effects on nursing care and patient outcomes depending on the program and the facility.
